our showroom has a vast range of pieces on display, with the range of timber characteristics for you to experience. our cabinetmakers are highly skilled at timber selection and grain matching and spend considerable time ensuring that each piece is carefully matched to your request. we can build from some other sustainably grown species and prefer to use australian species wherever possible.

we love australian hardwoods and pioneered their use in contemporary furniture design from 1991. australian hardwoods are generally three times denser than hardwoods from around the world. in their first diary entries in 1788, the english settlers at sydney cove declared that eucalypts were useless for anything because they were too difficult to cut. recent developments in technologies for kiln drying, gluing, machining and lacquer finishing have meant that we can make furniture using these amazing sustainably grown timbers, that is incredibly durable, as well as beautiful.

we love spotted gum in particular, for so many reasons. due to its chemical composition, spotted gum has a rare lustrous surface and has a great range of colours, from occasionally pale golden, through to occasional rich dark nutty brown. we can source it locally (southern queensland through to southern new south wales) so it has greatly reduced “carbon miles” and most importantly we can ensure that it is certified sustainably grown.

solid timber develops a rich surface over time, called patina. with care, this will ensure that your furniture will improve with age. all timber will change over time due to interaction with air. we use the best possible lacquers that resist moisture, abrasion, household chemicals and heat. we have had rave reviews from clients about the durability of our surfaces. all natural fibres, including all timber, needs to be kept away from direct sunlight to avoid degradation. prolonged and regular exposure to direct sunlight will result in bleaching of timber, failure of glues, cracking of lacquer, and rapid aging. despite this, we feel that with the most basic care, the beauty of our furniture will only increase, as patina develops.

the majority of the spotted gum falls in the mid range of our guide and over time becomes a little darker, richer and generally (but not always) warmer. the three sample images above are intended as a guide only. each piece is different; however, as we build so much from the same species, we generally can find material to fit a particular colour request and can easily tone together a suite of pieces. timber has an embedded history, visible in the material. a tree healing after a bushfire causes gum vein, small splits often result from high wind combined with dense timber. wiggly grain is a genetic variation. variable colour is due to nutrients that change with environmental conditions such as drought and floods. the samples above are intended as a guide, and each piece will have individual character.
