michelle paints the landscape from above, as one might see it from an aeroplane or as a bird looking down. michelle creates her work representing how the tjala (honey ants) tunnel through the sandy soil, waterholes and the assemblages of trees and shrubs. honey ants are found about a metre underground beneath the mulga trees when the pijantjatjara go looking for the honey ants, they drill holes under the trees. then they see the honey ants, they use shovels to dig a hole. honey ants are a highly favoured food source. they suck the honey like liquid from the abdomen of the ant. they story of the honey ant is an important link between mythology and interdependence of the environment.

this original artwork has been hand painted by aboriginal artists at the ernabella arts centre. ernabella arts centre is a place where elders, young women and men practice their art, in order to sustain, support and promote cultural heritage and improve the lifestyle of their communities members.
