bartels work is vitrified porcelain, water tight and fully functional as a vase. after an initial firing at approximately 1300 degrees, the peice undergoes a second firing with sawdust in a closed container. each piece is also wrapped in leaves. during this firing process, the pores of the clay open and the smoke and burning sawdust enter the clay. as the piece cools, the pores close and trap the smoke which is trapped in the clay body resulting in a spectrum of moody black/grey stains with imprints of leaves.
the beauty of this process is the individuality and uniqueness of each piece that is formed.
**due to the hand made nature of the product, each bowl varies slightly in texture and appearance as photographed.
