i happened upon the work of brad schweiger (usa) when i returned home and loved how he says ...”the more clay i use – the more active it becomes –i’m playing on the edge where the clay is on the verge of collapse”. he has followed in peter voulkos’s footsteps, who applies the zen buddhist philosophy of spontaneity to his forms and was famous for vigorously tearing, pounding and gouging his pieces. this approach is far removed from the fine wheel thrown bowls i had been making and that’s exactly what i wanted. so i went from there, making chunky pots on the wheel, cutting and gouging until i could tell the pot had been pushed to its limit.

these pieces are made from keane porcelain, some thrown and altered on the wheel and others cut from thick slab hand built pots. this makes them somewhat heavy as they need to be thick in order to get the detail while cutting, but perfect as vases that don't fall over. sized from tiny bud vases to larger spray vases. they are fired to 1290 celcius, so that they body is strong and durable. they are a joy to make and every piece is different.

they have been glazed with a very versatile and reliable dolomite matt glaze, which i have worked on over the years. it's the same base recipe each time with different oxides. the pink, purple, blues are made from cobalt carbonate and the beige/ greens a combination of rutile and copper carbonate and sometimes even a copper blush if fired in a reduction kiln. this glaze is best sprayed on as you then achieve the colour variations, for example in the first coat you get blue, with the second coat you get pink and in the third coat you get black
