vanessa aims to produce utilitarian objects that have lasting value and durability. the making of ceramics is inextricably linked to the history of human needs and endeavours. with the prevalence of industrial processes, handmade ceramics are now an opportunity to enrich everyday life. vanessa likes to provoke an emotional response to familiar objects through the subtle inclusion of references that mysteriously echo elements of the natural world.
the technique of slip-casting allows the design of each piece to be refined until the form of the object and its functional purpose blend seamlessly. vitrified porcelain develops great strength and provides both durability and translucent beauty. vanessa currently use two different porcelain clay bodies in conjunction with three different glazes. the glazes have been formulated to integrate with the clay bodies to form soft satin surfaces. the use of glazes with a restrained sheen enables the forms to softly emanate an intrinsic luminescence. pleasure in the utilitarian is an unwavering priority in vanessa’s designs, making their presence felt with subtlety and quietude.
