terunobu hirata is a melbourne based potter who studied at the warrandyte potter's college in the 1990's. in that time he also studied alongside a number of traditional potters in japan with a particular influence on japanese bizen pottery.
in this work, hirata combines the technical difficulties of bizen pottery and the technique of faceting to create this iron red gold glaze vase. the piece is hand thrown stoneware from a dark body clay.
