terunobu hirata is a melbourne based potter who studied at the warrandyte potter's college in the 1990's. in that time he also studied alongside a number of traditional potters in japan with a particular influence on japanese bizen pottery.
hirata combines the tracing of wood fired bizen wood fire by using ash and straw glazes, transfering the characteristics onto the face of the vase - although glazes are not used on bizen pottery.
this piece is hand thrown stoneware with a two piece join in the middle of the work.
