several hundred years ago, the lambadi tribals migrated from north western india to the south. they were a nomadic tribe but ended up settling down in tamil nadu.
the lambadi women of the community had a rich tradition of hand embroidery which their ancestors did on the clothing and other day to day articles. throughout the course of time, when wearing the traditional dress stopped, the craft was lost for more than two generations. since 2006, the craft has been revived with the facilitation of tribal health initiative.
by supporting the lambadi women through their craft, you are supporting an ancient craft and their community through economic generation and empowerment. by earning an income through their craft, this supports the women and their families that otherwise wouldn’t be able to earn. this encourages upcoming generations to take pride in the culture and through financial support, opportunities are opened up for the future of families.
