hirata originally trained as a chef and worked at kuni’s japanese, one of the oldest japanese restaurants in australia. his experience as a chef has informed his work as a potter, ensuring that the form and function of each piece has been carefully considered. his work is as beautiful to look at as it is to use with a strong awareness of balance and detail.
terunobu hirata is melbourne based and works in stoneware and porcelain. having studied at the warrandyte potter’s cottage in the 1990’s, he has been practising for over 15 years. in that time, he has also studied alongside a number of traditional potters in japan with a particular influence on japanese bizen pottery.
