  • green

china is home to a centuries old buddhist tradition. this seated temple bodhisattva (an enlightened being who is in the physical world to benefit others) is from central china in the period of the emporer 'chien lung'  (1780-1840) and is carved timber  with traces of paintwork and comes with a certificate of authenticity. the green porcelain vintage vessels are japanese.

this japanese vessel has an oribe glaze with great luster. it has been hand-thrown and altered in porcelain and perfectly displays a japanese intersection of a sense of control meeting a certain looseness in execution.

these cushions are digitally printed in either velvet or linen, each one is unique

the cabinet below was a custom design for a home entrance alcove. our solid engineered spotted gum allows us to built quality that will be incredibly robust, while having panels which stay stable. over time the surface will also develop a rich patina and become even more beautiful

entitled malilanya, this painting in acrylic by inawinytji stanley is a creation story from the the ernabella community of the apy lands. we are honoured to be able to present paintings expressing traditional stories in this way. and as you may know already, the full price of these works benefits the community, with the normal margin paid to the artist and our usual retail margin donated to a dialysis charity to assist people living in community

  • pale carpet collection

many clients have asked us for paler carpets .... so we listened and went on a journey and had a fresh collection made for you in india... the home of natural fibres and elaborate hand loomed carpets for centuries....

the wool hand loomed pieces above are 100% wool pile and are made for us in three sizes.

the top of our range would be this pure silk pile, double persian knotted style.

the loom is vertical so the pile is pulled in one direction to create a nap, so there is a lovely movement in the pile. its made near varanasi in northern india.

they are repeatedly washed to keep the colour and shape stable.

in one pastel colour each they, have have an ultimate look of understated luxury and feel absolutely spectacular..

the musky pink found a permanent home on its first day in our showroom.. but we can make a huge range of colours on order... perhaps navy blue, or deep emerald?

    definitely for the good room...

a lovely maker from agra made these flat-weave silk dhurries for planet.........I have never seen this done before.

they are so elegant and understated with natural colour variation.

  • a few recent new designs

at planet we offer a design service to create original pieces for particular spaces. hundreds of original designs are produced by planet every year and most go undocumented..... this particular client wanted a piece for his office to hold folders that are not particularly attractive, so I came up with a rotating shelf for the corner of the space...so that they could be hidden if desired. the strength of our solid engineered spotted gum makes this design possible..... and it relates to our dalsace desk  that he has, perfectly.

some designs are evolutions of other successful pieces. our twisted table range is a reduction of structure by eliminating the need for an extra sub frame because the legs interlock to do this work. this elliptical coffee table works well as the centre piece of a room, with no sharp corners, and the legs are recessed so that they are easy to move around also

the quilted cabinet was designed for a particular client who didn't quite make the effort to come to look at what I had designed for them.......but I was happy enough to have it built anyway. our solid engineered spotted gum allows complicated angles in our joinery to be executed beautifully and will ensure that the piece continues to improve over time. employing the timber itself as a decorative element reminds clients of deco influences, but I think that its still completely contemporary.

  • autumn

lovely samorn brought us these beautiful japanese maple leaves this week... so I guess we are officially autumnal at planet. pinky tones are awfully fashionable but persian style carpets are totally out, so we thought combine them and draw your eyes to some incredibly beautiful detail...

lots of new elements make up this room setting, our quilted console which celebrates our australian spotted gum, a carved timber vintage buddha from china, vintage japanese ceramics, planet's soft furnishings made from handwoven and hand embroidered silks, turkish, afganistani and indian hand knotted carpets, kris coad's shelter bone china chandelier, vases by terunobu hirata and murray topham

handknotted carpets bring such richness and texture to a room. the piece on top is central turkish and is silk pile on cotton. done in a regional style, the pattern is executed without a cartoon to have lovely naive motifs and it is of course beautifully soft. the piece on the right is from samarkand afghanistan and is wool on cotton. interestingly it has a swastika motif in the border which is a traditional buddhist symbol. the fine silk on cotton carpet underneath is from kashmir and is made in the persian style with stylised botanical motifs within rectangular spaces...lush patterns add a serviceability to a carpet too...

the vintage lidded pots are used in japanese tea ceremony and are called mizusashi and traditionally carry fresh water. the swirled round vase is by terunobu hirata who is japanese and lives in australia. the other two pale vases seem to be woodfired and have lovely subtle colour variation.
